Mycotoxins are produced by moulds in grains, mixed feeds or forages stored above optimum moisture content. They have been implicated in a variety of acute equine health problems including colic, neurological disorders, paralysis, hypersensitivity, abortions and brain lesions. Low levels have cumulative effects which can gradually damage organ function, ultimately reducing growth in young animals and causing infertility and respiratory problems in racing or working horses.
